JUMBO
MANUALS
In 1949, Hausemann & Hötte, makers of Jumbo games, came out with 3 new Mobaco sets: A, B and C. First in a simple red box, then in a box with a large blue label. See Jumbo Sets for more background on these boxes. A year later, in 1950, they brought out a completely new progressive series labeled A, B, C and D, with makeup sets AB, BC and CD. The contents of sets A, B and C were different from the initial series. The makeup sets had the parts necessary to upgrade to the next larger set. So A + AB = B, B + BC = C, etc. Based on the number of makeups sets available on the second hand market today, many kids did this. In 1951, they added Set E and makeup set DE. This series of 5 progressive sets and 4 makeup sets remained the same until they discontinue Mobaco in 1961. For the initial ABC series, Jumbo had 3 manuals with examples of models. The manuals were named Example Books A, B and C. Confusingly, these books did not relate to the corresponding sets A, B and C, but simply showed increasingly large models. The larger models usually required several of the initial ABC sets. For the later ABCD series, the manuals were named after the set they belonged to: Manual A, B, C and D, and AB, BC and CD. With the issuance of Set E, they did not add issue a Manual E, instead they made a single Manual AE, which was included with all sets. There are several versions of this booklet. Below all Jumbo manuals found so far. For each manual, there is a picture of the cover, thumbnails of each page, and some basic statistics. A link sends you to a page with 100 dpi scans. Where possible, a PDF with 150 dpi scans is provided for downloading. Cover scans are shown at half of actual size, thumbnails at 1/5th actual size. JUMBO MANUAL AE OVERVIEW Starting in 1951, all the sets (A through E) had the same manual. So far we have found 6 versions of this booklet, 3 that are printed in black & white and 3 that have a colored cover and some colored pages: Black and white cover: Version 1: banner logo with the letters HH in the elephant, instructions in Dutch (1951) Version 2: banner logo with the letters Jumbo in the elephant, instructions in Dutch Version 3: banner logo with the letters Jumbo in the elephant, instructions in 5 languages Color cover and instructions in 5 languages: Version 4: banner logo with the letters Jumbo in the elephant, no black headers Version 5: banner logo with the letters Jumbo in the elephant, black headers showing the set number Version 6: elephant logo, black headers showing the set number In Version 3, the first page with models is replaced by a page with instructions in 4 additional languages. So models A1, A2, A5 and A12 only appear in versions 1 and 2. In version 4 there is a small error on page 14. The header above model D1 "Uitspanning" states incorrectly that this model can be built with Set C. Jumbo issued an Errata sheet to correct this mistake. This was corrected in versions 5 and 6. In versions 5 and 6, the layout of the instructions on page 2 and 3 is different from versions 3 and 4, giving each language an equal amount of space. JUMBO MANUAL AE VERSION 2 Black & white cover, banner logo with the letters Jumbo in the elephant, instructions in Dutch. 135 x 195 mm 24 pages (including covers) Onecolor printing (black) 12 designs for Set A 13 designs for Set B 8 designs for Set C 6 designs for Set D 5 design for Set E Contents for sets A, AB, B, BC, C, CD, D, DE and E See pages DOWNLOAD PDF

JUMBO MANUAL AE VERSION 4 Color cover, banner logo with the letters Jumbo in the elephant, no black headers. This is the first version with a color cover. This booklet is essentially the same as the above B&W version, except that the second page is devoted to a narrative in 4 languages, English, French, German and Spanish, and the third page in Dutch. As a result, there is one fewer page for models. The cover features the older Jumbo logo. If you look closely, there are a few differences to the cover illustration. For instance, two trees disappeared, and the girl's hand was retouched accordingly. The ground plate of the small building was enlarged, and sits closer to the 4x4 ground plate with the bridge. The ground plates are shown thicker. The shadows in the boy's sweater disappeared, and the girl now has a lightcolored skirt. There is a small mistake on page 14 with model D1, "Uitspanning". In the header it says incorrectly that this model can be built with Set C. Jumbo issued an Errata sheet to correct this mistake (see below). This error was corrected in subsequent versions. 135 x 195 mm 24 pages (including covers) Covers + 4 center pages: fourcolor printing (CMYK) Remainder: single color (black) 8 designs for Set A 13 designs for Set B 9 designs for Set C 5 designs for Set D 5 design for Set E Contents for sets A, AB, B, BC, C, CD, D, DE and E See pages DOWNLOAD PDF

Also, the header (top edge) of each page is laid out differently, with a black rectangle indicating the set number. The cover features the later Jumbo logo. 135 x 195 mm 24 pages (including covers) Covers + 4 center pages: fourcolor printing (CMYK) Remainder: single color (black) 8 designs for Set A 13 designs for Set B 8 designs for Set C 6 designs for Set D 5 design for Set E Contents for sets A, AB, B, BC, C, CD, D, DE and E See pages DOWNLOAD PDF
